For real Zakynthian country cooking, the best advice is to head northwest to the mountainous coastline of the island.

About 30 km away for Zakynthos town we meet the Cross, a well-known temple of local gastronomy offering honest home cooking and local wine. It stands right above the sea of the west coast, just 800 meters after the sleepy hamlet of Kampi. The location and the views are dramatic steep clifts, deep blue waters and perhaps the most beautiful sunset on the island. At "Cross" you can sample some authentic Zakynthian recipes, like rabbit with onions in tomato sauce and chicken baked in the oven as well as home made bread, the local oil cheese "ntopio", fresh salads with vegetables from the village gardens, a variety of grilled meets and of course the classic moussaka.
